A Distinctive Education

As a Christian school, we believe the Bible to be inspired by God and so true in all that it states and teaches. We believe the Bible tells us the truth about God and all that he has created. We incorporate biblical content in a variety of ways so that our students come to develop a biblical understanding of themselves and all of reality.

“ “In the beginning, God created…” These first words of the Bible assume that there is a God, that he created everything, and that God is distinct from his creation. The Bible goes on to teach that, as the creator, God is the great king with the right and power to rule all he has made. Humanity, however, has rebelled against the great king and stands in danger of his justice. God, in his great mercy, has sent his Son, Jesus, into the world to bear the just penalty of human rebellion in place of rebellious humans. Jesus accomplished this work at the cross where he died in the place of sinners. Three days later he rose from the dead and, fifty days after that, ascended into heaven. The Bible now promises that those who believe that Jesus rose from the dead and who confess him as king will be rescued from the penalty of sin, granted eternal life, and will be adopted as God’s own children. These truths are foundational for a biblical understanding of reality and may be grasped by even the youngest of children.

At NLCS, we teach these truths in many ways. Throughout the year, our students attend weekly chapel where they learn biblical truth in age appropriate, engaging ways. Beginning in the 2024/25 school year, we will be teaching an attribute of God with each letter of the alphabet. Our classes will read stories, both fictional and non-fictional, which communicate biblical truth. We will also learn great truths through the songs we sing in class. In these and other ways, we help our students perceive the goodness and beauty of reality as understood through the Bible.

Character

Reflecting on biblical truth, Blaise Pascal declared humanity “the garbage and glory of the universe.” Glory because humanity is made in God’s image. Garbage because we are twisted by sin. From ancient times, one task of education has been training in virtue. Christian education is no different. At NLCS, we continue this ancient task.

Because of our understanding of the Bible, we recognize that no one is able to be good like God is good. All people sin and fall short of the glory of God but may be washed clean through faith in Jesus’ work on the cross. The person who believes is transformed and begins to grow in goodness. Our training in virtue is for the purpose of preparing individuals to thrive as citizens of the world and, possibly, as citizens of heaven. It is not for the purpose of earning God’s favor as this can only be achieved through faith in Jesus. (Ephesians 2:1-10)

Partnering with Parents

We believe that parents have the primary responsibility to raise their children and have the greatest influence on those children. Our role, as a Christian school, is to partner with parents.

Our goal is to join you, the parent, in laying foundations for your child to thrive. Our role in the lives of our students is temporary – Your role as parents is lifelong! We trust that families choose NLCS because they believe in our approach and so we labor to foster a partnership between the home and the school.

Our teachers are always available to discuss parental concerns. They also routinely communicate concerns and accomplishments to parents. Our staff sends regular emails to families along with paper communications so that parents are aware of school events and activities. Our director and staff strive to be approachable and available to parents so that we may work together for the good of your children.
